Bursitis or tendon injuries around the hip are relatively common.
The most common cause for this is hip arthritis, with the second most common being inflammation due to muscle tightness over the hip.
Bursitis can cause significant discomfort, but in most cases it settles with physio and stretches. If the underlying cause is hip arthritis, then that often needs addressing with a hip replacement. If there is no associated arthritis, we can use injections, such as cortisone or Platelet Rich Plasma, and holistic assessment with a physiotherapist looking at your muscles, alignment and the way you walk.
Bursitis rarely may need surgery if its associated with a complete tear to one of the underlying main muscles into the hip, the gluteus medius. Most cases settle without surgery, although the timeline to improve can be variable from weeks to many months.
